The Readspeed Lukas cdi unit The traditional Lambretta electronic system generates the power for the spark with a low tension coil on the stator plate. The low tension coil is a very fine wire coil with many turns. As a result it is one of the most fragile components of the ignition system. It does not deal well with heat or vibration. Readspeed have neatly sidestepped the problem by taking the power for the spark from the lighting coils on the stator instead. The Lukas CDI removes the ‘weakest link’ (the LT coil) from the Lambretta electronic system making it significantly more robust. It also means that if your LT coil fails, fitting the Lukas CDI will ‘repair’ it without you having to remove the flywheel. It is prudent to always check your ignition timing with a strobe when you change any component in your ignition system. As a safety precaution the Lukas CDI will retard your timing by 1 degree compared to most standard CDI units i.e. if you run 19 deg before top dead center fitting the Lukas unit will retard that to 18 deg BTDC. The Lukas CDI also now makes it possible to run two ignition systems on one bike by running the Lukas CDI in conjunction with an external pick up box. You still have your original Ignition, but now have the Lukas system piggybacked on top. This means you can either run the two kits with different ignition timings to suit different fuels / conditions, or just for the built in redundancy of carrying your spares already fitted to the bike.
